Artist research: Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas(1953) is one of the iconic artists of the 21st century for her intimate and at the same time aloof figurative portraits that explore the complexities of identity and social art(The art story, n.d).

“Mamma Roma” by Marlene Dumas, 2012

She stood out for her expressive and emotional style, through which she explored themes of gender, race, identity, sexuality, love, death and shame(Attewell, 2023). At the same time, the works themselves were characterised by sensitive but expressive emotional ferocity, rudeness and courage in confronting controversial issues.

“Chlorosis (Love sick)” by Marlene Dumas, 1994

As an example, Chlorosis(Love sick) explains a lot of aspects of her interesting approach to creativity. The main idea of this work is love longing, a disease tied up by intense grief. The process of creating this painting was based on photographs that helped Marlene Dumas find similarities with the main idea of her work, through images of people and their meanings, since the main problem of this study was built on the question of how to show the image of love sick when feelings do not have images. Therefore, as Marlene Dumas stated herself, in her work she used watercolour paint and a lot of water in order to create the effect of blots and limitlessness (Dumas, 1994). I love this idea and approach to art, I want to learn a lot from Dumas and her artworks.
